So much to share with you guys since the last newsletter. I haven't been hitting you weekly over the last couple of weeks cause I've been on the move pretty heavy. God is good. JUMP N FUNK, America's Original Afrobeat Party, was born of the collective vision and efforts of Rich Medina, Debbie Sealy and Trevor Schoonmaker in late-summer, 2001. Trevor was curating an unprecedented museum exhibit, "The Fela Project", at a time when many were unaware of Fela Kuti, his music and his legacy. Through a meeting facilitated by Visual Artist, Brett Cook Dizney, Rich, Debbie & Trevor developed the party concept with the sole intention of raising awareness about the King of Afrobeat.

Within three months, JUMP N FUNK grew from an intimate afterwork gathering, to an event avidly attended by hundreds at Shine, (currently the address of The Canal Room). From Shine, JNF moved around New York City for a several years, landing in The Coral Room, Cielo, Central Park SummerStage and The Martinez Gallery before settling into a long residency with S.O.B.'s in 2004. By 2006, as Debbie and Trevor pursued other interests, Medina was determined to restructure and reinvigorate the party brand which, while still tied heavily to celebration of Fela Kuti, provided a more expansive view into the burgeoning rebirth of Afrobeat Music. In late 2006 Rich Medina combined forces with his studio production partner Mark Hines (The Marksmen) to expand the JNF experience with live video and instrumentalist performance elements.

With the event re-tooled, Medina and The Marksmen set about touring the JUMP N FUNK party anywhere there was demand. To date, JUMP N FUNK has toured the world, making stops in Catania, Sicily; Tuscany, Italy; London at The Barbican Museum; Manchester's Rich Mix; MC Theater in Amsterdam; Paris with Free Your Funk; Tokyo with DJ Muro and Seiji Hitomi; Brussels; and Tuebingen, Germany as well as numerous nationwide and Canadian tour dates over the years. Beyond touring theJNF brand, Rich Medina has also toured as the Official Tour Date DJ with both Femiand Seun Kuti, Zap Mama, Wunmi, and New York City's Antibalas, further extending the reach of JNF to the masses.

Peace everyone,

Had a blast in Denver and Austin this past weekend. Both Beauty Bar ( Den) and Lanai Rooftop ( Aus) were both beautiful, and well attended. Big love goes out to Lilly, Magneto, Papa Chop, Jeff Strange, and all Denver and Austin family, old and new.

Tonight at Props, Akalepse and I have the pleasure of hosting Sao Paolo Brazil's DJ Nuts. For the record, homeboy runs things down there regarding the record game, so i an only imagine what he might play tonight…. I can't wait to find out and we hope to see you there!

Reviving the Black Supernatural Experience

Two evenings of immersion into the blessed realm of African and Afro-Diasporic culture.

(Oakland, CA) -- Tuesday, June 21, 2011 -- Historically, African peoples and their descendants have used the terms gods, ancestors, and elemental spirits more or less interchangeably. Words like orishas are used to describe divine beings who are the forces of nature, yet live within us. In a cultural context, the gods are simply those who have come before us and watch over us. They are Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Bessie Smith, Gil Scott-Heron, Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix, Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls, as well as Isis and Osiris, Shango and Oshun -- and your great-grandpa and great-grandma.

The cultural tradition of ancestor worship weaves like a sacred snake through Africa and the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora, linking Nigerian Yoruba with its syncretic derivatives -- Cuban Lukumi, BrazilianCandomble, Haitian Vodun - as well as other traditional indigenous beliefs: Malian Doumia, GhanaianAshanti, Dahomeyan Mami Wata, Sudanese Jok, South African Zulu. It represents both Kemetic (or Egyptian) Neteru and the Nommo of the Dogon people. It is a state of being which places spirituality, religion, and cultural expression on an equal plane, a conception of time as circular and not linear. Its fabric is the thread from which blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, and hip-hop were woven into the tapestry of the African American experience. It is the intangible abstract which informs and accompanies the oral and musical tradition of black people in America, the axe, chi, sekhem - colloquially, "soul power" -- which gives us life and informs our existence through word, song, and dance.

Now that we've explained the background, on with the show. On June 30 and July 1, 2011, Top Ten Social (TTS) invites you to two very special nights. Thursday night, 'cultural Jedi' Ashara Ekundayohosts a discussion with guest speakers hip hop theater artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, DJ/producer Rich Medina, and singer-songwriter Jennifer Johns, moderated by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights'Abel Habtegeorgis. This informal talk, part of the ongoing TTS.Speaker Series, will address themes including strategies for leveraging art to inspire social change; the role of artists as activists; how do we elevate and inform people of their inner divinity; and creating pathways out of mental slavery. An interactive audience Q&A will follow the main discussion.

Friday's event places the Supernatural Black Experience in the context of live performance. The speakers of the previous evening join with additional guest artists and are transformed into conduits of the divine spirit, celebrating ancestors - the gods - with expressions of spirituality, sustainability, solidarity, and sovereignty delivered in music, food, & word. Bamuthi and jazz-hop virtuoso Kev Choice both pay homage to legendary jazz poet and social commentator Gil Scott-Heron; Johns channels soul diva Nina Simone, reborn as an Oakland b-girl; "rebel soul music" creator Martin Luther invokes guitar visionaryJimi Hendrix; and Medina lays down a deeply rhythmic soundscape which will touch on everyone from James Brown to Fela Kuti to Bob Marley to Michael Jackson. Ekundayo will provide the invocation for what promises to be an evening long to be remembered - in this world and the afterlife.

So, are the gods really crazy? Or is their true role to show us the insanity of the world man has created, and to reunite us with our true nature and divine selves? Find out Thursday, June 30 and Friday, July 1, as Top Ten Social revives the Supernatural Black Experience in Oakland.

Saturday afternoon is Central Park Summer Stage alongsde Lee Fields and The Expressions, Fitz and The Tantrums, and King, in their NYC debut appearance!

Congratulations to Dallas for being lion killers in The 2011 NBA Finals! Goliath is still overrated and humility is king, clearly...

Salute Danny Castro, Voodoo Ray, DJ Evil Dee, Jasmine Solano and Vintage West for a dpe Friday night in NYC last Fiday night. I think the night was a real success, and I look forward to rocking with you all again sometime real soon!

Salute The Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh for an incredible night at their annual fundraiser. I had a blast. Salute also to DJ SMI and Vex, for the hospitality and good time had after the gig. Really looking foward to getting back to Pittsburgh!

Sunday night, I was back home in Philly rocking Sundae at SIlk City with my mellow Lee Jones. Can't say enough about how dope that relationship and party is, and further, the dude brought a cat with him that looks like he could be my younger brother! This was a first…craziness…my stunt double...

Yesterday, I was blessed to speak to DJ Rekha and DJ Shiftee's DJ Class at NYU alongside the legendary Grand Wizard Theodore. Incredible...and on top of that, DJ Rekha and her generous self gave me this book. I plan to devour it this week...

Last night I had the pleasure of rocking my man Lee Quinones ( Wild Style/ Rock Steady Crew) opening party at Bob in The LES. I haven't been in that place since Bobbito was spinning there back in 2000! Mad fun, beautiful work from Mr. Quinones as usual, and good folks in the place.

Tonight, Akalepse and I get back to base at Props! at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street in New York City. You know what it is already...here's to another banger tonight! AND, LPR is celebrating their anniversary with US tonight, so we are expecting a gang of new fam in the place tonight! !)pm to 4am, and free before 11pm! Bong...

Peace everyone

This week I gotta start off the news with an apology to Ankh Promotions, 330 Ritch, and San Francisco as a whole. Last week I did 8 gigs in 11 days, in 7 different cities. By the time I got to San Francisco on Saturday (9th gig), I was totally exhausted, and traveling without a road manager. I paid for that by sleeping through my booking at 330 Ritch like an asshole. I have no excuse but to apologize and be honest with you all. My body shut down when I took what I wanted to be a nap...I was in a damn road coma and I need you all to know that I would NEVER intentionally disrespect my fans, or anyone who books me. I totally fucked up last Saturday, and I am sending my most sincere apologies to everyone involved in the production as well as the fans who had to be refunded their money due to my missing the event. Further, I paid for my own hotel room, and I am in the process of paying for my flights in and out of San Francisco last week as well. That is my only means through which I can show my sincerity and good faith after such a bad mistake. We are currently in talks with 330 Ritch and Ankh Promotions regarding a make up date, and we will keep you all posted on the make up date as it comes together. Here's to hoping that my San Fran folks will understand that I simply ran out of steam, made a huge mistake, and have no arrogance about it whatsoever. I fucked up, and I apologize. I would never disrespect any of you intentionally. Hopefully San Francisco will accept my apology. This has never happened to me before. I look forward to making things right with all parties involved soon, and thank you all deeply for your understanding. I just got a new alarm clock with a ball peen hammer on it, so that will never happen again. I take my lumps and learn my lessons like a man. Again, i apologize...

In happier news, the Atlanta auditions for Master Of The Mix Season 2 were really fun to judge. Salute Kid Capri and DJ Mars for making the day really fun! The same can be said for Detroit, where DJ Revolution, Kid Capri and myself took the DJs into the deep water to pick out the best of the best. Godspeed, and good luck to all the DJs who made it through to the next round! Salute!

I am the newest employee at DubSpot Music School! Pretty got damn excited about that, for sure. I'll be sitting in on a couple of week's worth of DJ classes on all levels until I get acclimated to the DubSpot system, and then it's on like Donkey Kong kids...A huge thank you to Dan Giove, Kelly, and DJ Kiva over at DubSpot for welcoming me on board, and here's to the future!

What up fam?

Tons of good stuff going on out here in Europe. Spent the day with my mans LeftO, DJ Kwak, Ivan and Boddhi Sattva in Brussels the day after Jump N Funk at KVS. Crazy night in Belgium that night to say the least! Salute to everyone involved!

Been in Amsterdam breaking bread with my peoples from Patta, Juice, KC The Funkaholic, Manga, Kid Sublime, Rogier, and my Paradiso family. Caught my 2nd Amp Fiddler show in two weeks ( we hosted Amp and Tony Allen last week at Props), and tonight was another special night, opening for the indelible Ray Ray Saadiq...incredible show!

In NYC, my man Akalepse and I have the pleasure of welcoming Easy Mo Bee to Props for a special set of vinyl nuggets for y'all tonight. If you're in NYC and you don't go to Props tonight and get you some, you're short changing yourself. Respect the Architect: DJs Are Musicians

DJ Tony Tone and DJ Kool Herc

Raydar Ellis, one of the pioneering academic scholars of hip-hop at Berklee College of Music, helped us explore some of the most common charges against turntablism not being considered an instrument. As a DJ/Producer/Emcee and scholar at one of the leading music institutions in the country, Raydar opined about the misconceptions out there that have excluded DJ’s from the pantheon of musicians, and the even greater issue of hip-hop not being considered music.

What is hip-hop without the DJ? Better yet, what is modern music without it either? The music industry until recently was vastly shaped by the taste-making DJs who were responsible for earning the trust of the average person and impressing upon them the latest tunes to enjoy. This practice had especially involved into a showcase of craftsmanship, polished knowledge of music, and bragging rights within the past three decades. DJing has become such a sensation that even a recent trend has developed with actors and personalities in Hollywood trying their hand at the craft, but that’s another story. The DJ culture has changed the way people interact with and enjoy music, and even recently has allowed pretty much anybody to enjoy partaking in it. It’s partly this reason that there has been recent criticism about the flood of inexperienced people seeking to either profit or take advantage of the technology that has simplified the mixing of music to mere button pushing. The profession has always been under scrutiny from music pundits, and even starting from its heyday, has had to fight to prove its validity.

Raydar: Sampling is seen as some sort of criminal act. A lot of the guys who produce were DJs. You get into this whole argument then where it’s about them not using an instrument. It’s not an instrument in the traditional sense.

The now infamous party that Kool Herc spun at in Sedgwick & Cedar projects in the Bronx back in 1973 that is credited as the start of hip-hop, as well as the mistake Grand Wizzard Theodore made when he ‘scratched’ his record when his mother told him to quiet it down and he stopped the record for a moment, set in motion a new generation of musicians who turned to their old records to create music. Yes, I said musicians.

But wait, here comes the protectors of all things related to ‘real music’ who have to dash the hopes of the kids by telling them that they have just been living a fantasy. They’ll tell the people at the party that what they’re listening to is pure rubbish, and they need a real band to have a good time. While this is only a part of the disdain for the hip-hop culture itself, DJs are especially seen as skill-less hacks who like the modern day producer as well have nothing better to do than to steal from other musicians to earn a quick buck. While this view has become less common with this generation who grew up on legendary DJs such as Jazzy Jeff, Jam Master Jay, Red Alert and Marley Marl, there still persists within especially the classically trained circles a rejection of this development without any realistic consideration to what is shared in common rather than not. And this stubbornness has been very misleading on many levels, some of which will be highlighted in this post.

Raydar: It’s the same thing over again. That’s how history repeats itself. You look into the past to advise what we will do in the future. The same thing with criticism, it’s all coming back again.

Before any type of meaningful discussion can take place on the authenticity of this art form through, a crucial event in the decade that hip-hop was born in has to be taken into account. The massive downsizing of public schooling in the 70s, which included the elimination of music programs, had a much larger impact on urban culture, one which may have very well altered the trajectory of music in the United States itself. The communities of mostly African Americans and Hispanics were mostly on the edge of poverty, or living in it. Due to this, many could not afford to have their children engage in the kinds of activities that have since been proven to be essential to child development. This included the arts and physical education. Public school offered these programs, and many a legendary musicians got their start because of this kind of societal investment. When hard economic times and conservative politics started to cut the budgets for these programs, many children were left without ways to express themselves creatively.

Raydar: But that’s the cool thing about music. There’s always going to something new, or some way people remake what we have to make new sound.

This is the point that the majority of critics entirely miss for the most part. When one considers that the birth and surge in popularity of the modern DJ began at this same time, it becomes clear that this shift was not voluntary. Many of the early DJs who come out of this period have often mentioned that the elimination of the arts in schools severed kids from access to instruments, teachers who knew musical theory, and opportunities that they otherwise had no way of getting involved in. When DJs such as Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash showed that there was a way for then to make music using only a record player, many took to this chance to develop their creative skills through this other means. It seems as if though some of these so called purists forget about this, or maybe didn’t realize the kind of privileges they had, but others didn’t.

Raydar: Just because you can’t write it down, doesn’t mean that it’s not an instrument. The writing is only a translation of what happened.

DJs are not purely isolated to hip-hop and dance music either, and the argument that they have never worked with other ‘musicians’ in a musical setting is false. The now famous hit of the 80s from Herbie Hancock, “Rock It,” featured the scratching of Grandmaster DXT on the track when the art of turntablism was just starting to grow into something bigger. This kind of experimentation also led many DJs into the realm of sampling, which has become the foundation for the modern day producer. By the time Branford Marsalis’ Buckshot Lefonque came out with “Breakfast At Denny’s” a decade later with Gang Starr’s own DJ Premier doing the cuts, the concept of being a DJ had evolved especially within the hip-hop circles to allow for more methods of expression. From looping a part of a song together to create a extended mix, to the transformation of using records to construct new songs or sound collages, the options of what a DJ could do were greatly extended.

Raydar: You have trumpet valves, you have bass strings, you have hi-hats. But all of those things are pieces of metal, pieces of string. They’re tools, just like the synthesizer is a tool. But its only devised in a way that makes it more user friendly. It’s still just a bunch of wires in a metal box. Just like the turntables are a a tool.

Just as turntables started out with a different purpose, musicians over the years have approached various instruments differently from their original intended purpose. They have gotten creative in the way they draw new sounds from their instruments, such as using plungers on trumpets, plucking the strings on a upright bass or swiping on a grand piano wire. Or even the improvisation of using common objects to make sounds such as blowing on a bottle or a shell is right up there. It’s this kind of thinking that really draws a similarity and realization in the way a musician, or any type of artist for that matter, finds new ways to express themselves through any tool and means available to them. In truth, there really should be no reason to differentiate between the development of the DJ or any other kinds of musicians. They may work with what they have differently, but what they are trying to achieve is the same: making music.

Raydar: That’s the thing that rubs a lot of people the wrong way. They say that “oh their using prerecorded sounds.” So what? Then they try to say that you’re not a musician.

One of the main attempts to discredit DJs and their methods of producing music is the claim that the turntables themselves aren’t capable of generating sounds themselves, which is funny to me, since I don’t recall a drum or a sax or a piano playing itself unless there is a human or some kind of object to produce the sound vibration. Mainly the blame goes towards the notion of the equipment DJs use as not being authentic, meaning acoustic in their terms. By that notion, it would then be unfair to provide any kind of musician with the equipment used to record or reproduce sound then, since the music is not being created authentically. It’s this sense of technophobia that is commonplace amongst such critics that can bad mouth anything musical from the 80s to the present, but aren’t able to see there being a little hypocrisy.

Raydar: And then you had groups like The Beatles who would use samples of audio recordings on their records. It was on The White Album they did.

Many of these critics who tend to discredit such technological advances also then place the likes of artists like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix on a musical pedestal above those in the hip-hop culture. What is overlooked in those cases is those acts were notorious for using sound effects, distortion, and unique panning methods with their music. Yet countless artists, even in jazz, cite them as a influence or as being great practitioners of music. The majority of the critics against hip-hop will admit, maybe even brag about, the fact that these artists are in fact valid. Just don’t let these artists they praise get involved with jazz or come from the urban culture, because then that would be sacrilegious on all counts and would put them at risk to getting their music card revoked.

Raydar: We wrote out quarter notes, 16^th notes, just like any other (instrument). You devise your measures, time signatures and everything. We have icons that let you know how to accentuate the cut, or which way to rub the record, so there’s definitely an accomplice to that. That’s why I see it as an instrument.

The turntables were also discredited as an instrument because no notational system had been devised for sheet music musicians to read. This has changed though. In the hip-hop classes at Berklee, Raydar says that his students have to learn about using the pitch changes on the turntable to hear the new sounds they made, and then assign notes to those sounds. And since the turntable is capable of reaching pitch ranges that the original sound they are using couldn’t, they are in fact generating new sounds from their turntable. I don’t know how then that can be interpreted as stealing music when the sounds the DJs make can’t even be reproduced by the original musicians themselves in many cases, and did you get down that there is a notation system that DJs use?

Raydar: One of the things that we have now more than ever is portable technology. The lines between what you can do in a studio and what you can do on a stage now are getting blurred…I’ve seen bands now triggering live samples on stage alongside a horn section with a DJ on the side.

If there is still any doubt about this, then one should consider what the new advancements in software aimed at DJs are starting to unlock. The leading program, Serato, has already sent a shock wave through the DJ sphere and freed them up from certain limitations from before. Plus now with the added functionality of sampling and the ability to hook up a drum pad, likening it to the famous Akai MPC or SP-1200 line, DJs can more easily expand their repertoire to include sounds of any instrument such as a drum or a keyboard to play with the music they’re spinning. This unlocks the potential for them to manipulate their music in ways that were mostly limited to a studio, or if someone was willing to bring their equipment with them to a show, and to take the sounds of classical instruments and play in the same way the revered musicians of the past could. I know this is scary for the purists out there, but yeah, it’s happening. This avenue in being explored now as we speak, and finally shatters the final barrier in the so called debate of musicians.

Raydar: Every time I get on a turntable deck, I really begin to take off and go on all of these tangents and find all of these things, and then I find some way to pull it all back together in the end. And the end result is that everyone is dancing. That’s incredible to me, but I’m pretty sure that for any instrumentalist they feel the same way. Spending all that time practicing with your fingers on the flip board to try to get the positions right, and for some guys you have to stretch your pinky extra. It may hurt at the time, but you work it out and get used to it. And then you go as a musician on stage and present it, and people will dance to it.

At this point, the DJ culture has been embraced by the world on a underground and mainstream level, and those who choose to resist this have mainly become victims of their own selective tastes and memory. It always struck me as being bizarre that this idea would even come up where there was a time that Jazz music was considered inauthentic as well. From it’s early days where the Creole musicians would mock the African-Americans for playing what they considered uneducated nonsense, to the times of the 30s when it was referred to as jungle music, Jazz has had to climb a similar uphill battle to achieve recognition for its place as American music, and for many of its musicians to attack what essentially came out of the same cultural tradition is very much baffling. Maybe there is some ageism involved, or there are some valid points in these criticisms. At the end of the day though, if you can dance to it or feel it, then who cares? This has always been the nucleus to the rise of any music genre, and both hip-hop and Jazz have the ability to do that. Both also have taken their place in influencing music worldwide, and both are here to stay. So stop talking all that Jazz, and get hip-hopping when you hear that beat.

Sunday night, I am excited to be rocking at Silk City, the very first 21+ venue I ever played records in, at Sundae on Sunday, March 20th, 2011. Lee Jones has been doing this party for what seems like an eternity, and I am always proud to be invited back there to rock. MIAMI RECAP

Winter Music Conference was really dope. Far moreso than I expected with the division of Ultra & WMC this year. Went to The Africanos party at Chesterfield with the South African DJ crew, the Next Aid joint with Nicodemus, Jeremy Sole and Will Quantic at Sobe Live Thursday, Rocked at Bardot with Raye 6 on Friday night to a packed house, downtown. Crazy. Louie Vega and Todd Terry at The Shore Club pool Sunday afternoon. Heard even more about parties i didn't even have the chance to attend. Shouts to everyone who made it dow to Miami and showed love.

I'm not gonna talk about it much more than this newsletter, but I was super drunk on Saturday at Jump N Funk. I hear I was a bit out of line from some important people. So, sorry everybody. Everybody plays the fool, sometimes. I was twisted. If you know me, you know I have a pretty decent tolerance for rum at this point in my life. I crossed the line that day, bugged the shit out of a few friends, and basically spent the second half of the night being that drunk annoying dude. My bad, to anyone who found me a problem. My track record is pretty strong, so I'll take that. Otherwise, it was a truly incredible night, with a live performance by Lady Alma, and strong sets from DJ Kemit, Djinji Brown and DJ Spinna. The music was still ultra banging, and so was the crowd response. Love Afro Life!

Sunday night was Ambassadors at Rokbar with Cluade Monet, DJ Rork, Daz I Kue, Rob Paine, myself and Keith Evan was a great way to close the weekend and the conference. Thanks and one love to everyone involved. I really enjoyed myself in Miami. This was the first year that I wasn't doing 3 events a day, and that was nice. The only problem that created was giving me the time to drink far more alcohol than any skinny tall dude should ever drink on Saturday.

Thursday I have the pleasure of rocking Red Bull's 45s event with Rob Paine, Diamond D, Kenny Dope and DJ Shakey at Czar in Tampa (Ybor City). Should be a day and night to remember, to say the least. I headlined the same event in Vegas about two years ago, and it was out of control!

Friday night In New York, I'll be rocking alongside my mellow Q Tip once again, this time at Ace Hotel. First time rocking together since we worked together at Santos... Yeah. You read it right... It's on like Donkey Kong son! If you miss what we used to do on Fridays at Santos, come get yourself a fat dose on Friday night... I'm expecting fireworks, personally...

To end this crazy ass week, Saturday night we are wishing my man Mike Nyce a Happy 40th at Tastytreats in Philly. If March 5th is anything like my last few visits, I'm seeing another one for the books going down…AND Mike getting old too? C'mon son...be there.

I'm in Miami tonight February 23rd at Bardot, the sister venue to our beloved and now defunct APT in NYC. With that, I will miss #PROPS at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC tonight. The fortunate aspect is that in my place, we got my man, and long time Li'l Ricky's support Deffrei (Ahficionados) holding down the wheels of steel alongside my mellow Akalepse. Brooklyn in the house... Should be an incredible night. I knew this brother as a supporter for mad years before the first time I heard him DJ with DJ Moma at their Monday night party in the LES a few months back. Bangin'… So, I am proud and thankful for Frei sitting in for me tonight at #PROPS. New York, go getchu some…

Regarding why I am not in NYC tonight… Miami, bring that ass downtown to Bardot tonight. I believe there is no cover ( don't stab me if im wrong) and there will also be a live performance. Regardless, come 11:30 or so, i plan to open the floodgates…so here's to a fantastic night in Miami tonight!

Friday night, it's back to Brooklyn for the Li'l Rick's BK Edition series at Deity. Last month, we had close to 200 folks rocking in the basement of Deity despite snowbanks almost as tall as me in Brooklyn. Hopefully this Friday the snowbanks will be far shorter and the traffic will be even thicker. Here's to seeing all of dancing Brooklyn at Deity, 368 Atlantic Avenue, this Friday night February 25th!

Saturday February 26th, I return to one of my favorite venues on the entire planet, Fortune Sound CLub in Vancouver BC! DJ Kemit. CEO of Kemit Muzik, Inc. Kemit divides his time between DJing, music production and being a family man. His DJ career began in 1982 at age 12 in Milwaukee and was heavily influenced by the growing house scene in Chicago.

“Let’s Move It Philadelphia”

It is time that our children get moving. You can help. A party to benefit programs for children in Philadelphia will feature Philadelphia’s own Black Thought of the Roots and the Jam Boys along with world renowned Philly top-DJ, Rich Medina. The event takes place on February 18, 2011 at the Blockley-38^th and Chestnut, Philadelphia

Building on Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative, and the commitment to raise a healthier generation of children, Dr. Janice Johnson Dias is hosting Let’s Move It Philadelphia: A Hip-Hop Benefit for Young Black Girls’ Health. This party with a purpose intends to support programs that promote healthy choices for black girls by providing funding and resources to local Philadelphia youth organizations working to improve the health and well-being of young adolescent black girls.

Obesity has increased among all adolescents in the United States over the past three decades. The most profound rates of obesity can be seen among young Black girls. Between 1988-1994 and 2007-2008, adolescent Black girls had the highest increase in rates of obesity and the highest rates of obesity, when compared to White and Hispanic adolescent girls. Action must be taken to increase awareness about obesity and obesity-related illnesses among young Black girls. Increasing physical activity is essential in the fight against childhood obesity and is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. The Surgeon General recommends that children need 60 minutes of active and vigorous play every day to grow up to a healthy weight.

Dr. Janice Johnson Dias, a scholar and children’s advocate, believes this issue is important to Philadelphia. According to The Philadelphia Department of Public Health in 2010 year, approximately 60% of children (ages 6 to 11) residing in Philadelphia were overweight or obese. More than a third (35.8%) of Black adolescents in Southeastern Pennsylvania are at risk for obesity, in contrast to 23.6% of White adolescents. Black adolescents ages 10 through 17 had the highest rates of obesity risk, compared to White adolescents, particularly Black adolescents ages 10 through 11, whose rates were as high as 50%. The survey also showed that as children get older, they are less likely to exercise. For example, 40% of children 10-11 years of age exercised 3-6 times per week, this rate decreases to 26.3% among children 12-14 years of age and to 21.4% for children 15-17 years of age.

Let’s Move It Philadelphia is an opportunity for residents of Philadelphia and others to show their support for raising healthy children by attending the event on February 18^th 2011 from 11:00pm-2am. Proceeds from the benefit will support physical activity programs in Philadelphia. Donations and advanced tickets should be made payable to The Black Rose Foundation for Children, Inc. Heavy week for your man in NYC! Four different events, all with different looks and rationale...and y'all know me. Steady lookin' for the perfect beat...so we're gonna do our best to make each night memorable for it's own musical reasons...

Tonight we kick the musical week off at Toca Tuesdays at Sutra, with my man DJ Tony Touch ( Rock Steady Crew) and DJ June ( ScratchVision). Tony and his crew have been nice enough to make this month their "Master Of The Mix Celebration" month, hosting Just Blaze, DJ Scratch, DJ Jazzy Joyce, and myself tonight, so i'm amped to be a part of the celebration!

Tonight also marks the release date of Talib Kweli's "Gutter Rainbows", which we will be celebrating as well. Expect a nice serving of hip hop, beaks, reggae, and a few surprises from yours truly.

Tomorrow night the 26th of January, we get back to basics at Props with myself and DJ Akalepse manning the controls. As usual, we will have some unexpected video footage rolling, as well as Akalepse and myself going after those deep funk and soul nuggets alongside some hip hop, a pinch of R & B, some dance classics, and whatever else comes to mind like we always do about this time...

2010 Thank you to you all...

2010 has indeed been an incredible year for me. A great deal of that I owe to the people who have patronized my events, the amazing DJs and artists i've been blessed to rock with in the club and the studio, my international family, and my loving family at home. Through al my ups and downs, it is this group of folks in varying degrees at different points throuhou the year who helped me maintain not only my sanity, but also heaped e raise the bar on my skillet AND my profile. I can not thank you all enough, and i promise you that 2011 will only rove to be more of the same from your mans. Thank you all.

Smirnoff's Master Of The Mix FInals Episode Tonight at Props 10:30pm sharp…

Thank you to everyone for all their encouraging words about my performance on Smirnoff's Master Of The Mix. I left my house for the final episode taping extremely confident that the remix i did for Talib Kweli was solid enough to earn me a trip to the finals in London, trust me. Not only that, but I felt as though playing vinyl ( and playing it very well, despite playing for 100 20 year old paid extras) would be the cherry on top that i needed to secure my place in the finals. Clearly, Kid Capri and the powers that be felt otherwise… It was a difficult day for me, but in the end I am extremely proud that the reason I did not make the finals is due to a vinyl purists decision. I have no hard feelings or harsh words, but rather i have the undeniable stamp of being THE ONLY DJ ON THE SHOW WHO HAD THE BALLS TO PLAY REAL RECORDS ON TV, LET ALONE IN A CHALLENGE DESIGNED TO PICK THE 2ND FINALIST ON THE SHOW. With that, i thank you Smirnoff, GTM Central, BET/CENTRC and my fellow competitors for an incredibly enlightening experience shooting the show. Here's to the opportunities that await us all going forward, and salute Vikter Duplaix and DJ Scratch for becoming the last 2 men standing.

This past Friday my man Cosmo Baker and I rocked together at Deity in BK for my monthly Li'l Ricky's BK night there. All I can say is that i truly love spinning with Cosmo, and though we've seen more traffic at the event, the energy in the room was really dope. We were about 50 people away from selling out the room, so to be clear, it was far from dead…we were just looking for that standing room only vibe we had the last time. Regardless, a reat time was had by all, and we look forward to seeing you all again at the end of August…

We want to thank everyone who has supported PROPS, since we moved into LOVE almost 2 months ago now. The party has been incredible so far, and we couldn't have made the move so smoothly without the support of all of you. In an effort to maintain that support and keep you informed, we are making it public that we have decided to discontinue our relationship at LOVE as of this past Wednesday night. Shouts to MeanRed for the facilitations, and shouts to LOVE for giving us a chance to test our little party out over there, but we are moving on. The decision was made by Akalepse and myself, and there was no shady business from LOVE to be clear. Square pegs simply do not fit into round holes more often than not. A weekly party like ours feels like a square peg to LOVE's currently round hole, and we need a proper fit. No more no less, and no hard feelings. Perhaps there is a more fitting linkage for us in the future, but for now it's a wrap.

PROPS will resume play on Wednesday nights at The Galllery Bar at Le Pouisson Rouge starting on May 12th. We will be on pause for the next few weeks regrouping and reintroducing the party. For those who miss the subtle swankiness of APT on wednesdays for the last 9 years, we think you will find this move most satisfying. Music and a small classy room can go a long way together. We're hoping to see you all out rocking with us on our opening night at LPR, which once again will be Wednesday May 12th, 2010.

At the moment, APT is temporarily closed until further notice. I was told there was a chance the venue would reopen tonight, but that has not happened unfortunately. With that, Li’l Ricky’s is postponed tonight. The party is NOT OVER, nor do we plan to ending the night at all, so just stay tuned for more news on that front.

The remainder of January is scheduled pretty simply, with Li’l Ricky’s APT and BK editions closing out the month over next Wednesday night at APT, and Friday night at Deity in Brooklyn!

My bad for being a bit slack on these website newsletters for the last couple of weeks. My fellow “parents on tour” know what it is haha... Let's cut to the chase...I was fired suddenly by Santos this past Thursday, November 5th, out of the blue. Turns out that the decision to fire me happened immediately after our "planning" meeting to set up a new guest DJ roster. With that, I get a call from a manager there saying they are moving on with other plans with Q Tip, and "bigger names". QTip says it was their decision. Santos says the decision was forced by QTip. I don't know, but what I do know is that I've been fired, which is...interesting...but, etiquette and respect are expensive these days I guess.

With that, I wanna say thanks, peace and love... to all the patrons, venue staff, security, fellow DJs, performers, dancers, and new friends who showed love and support while I was a part of Open. It was great while it lasted, and my conscience is clear. I showed up to work consistently, and held up my end of the bargain while I was there. Blessings come in strange forms. I look forward to what will come of no longer being involved with Open and Santos. Keep Shining.

It is rare that an artist erupts onto the musical landscape, defines a genre, shakes the world its core and departs too soon leaving a legacy that can fill the night sky. Jazz had John Coltrane. Rock had Jimi Hendrix. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti and on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th Jump N Funk, Libation, FELA! The Musical, The Museum for African Art & S.O.B.'s pay homage to the life of Nigeria's warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa's most prolific musical pioneer with a documentary, Music is the Weapon, live drummers, special performance by dance virtuosos Afro Mosaic Soul and leading the evening's tribute are DJ Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk and DJ Ian Friday, minister of sound for Libation, ground zero for the Soul Revolution.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, north of Lagos and received his early education in his homeland. In 1958 Fela's parents sent him to London to go to school for medicine, but he opted to register at Trinity College's School of Music where he studied composition and chose the trumpet as his instrument. Fela became influenced by legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra and formed the Koola Lobitos in 1961. They soon became a fixture in London's club scene. Two years later, he created
"Afrobeat", which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. Fela reformed the Koola Lobitos to Nigeria 70 and returned to Lagos. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

Playing constantly and recording at a ferocious pace, Fela and his band now called Africa 70 became huge stars in West Africa and beyond. His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. As with any musical icon, his work crossed over musical genres and influenced a multitude of artists. Fela died on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria. His incredible body of work, almost 70 albums, is now available
through public demand all over the world.

FELA! The Musical brings the colorful life of this icon front and center through a provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theatre. FELA! features arrangements by Aaron Johnson and Antibalas with direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones.

DJ Rich Medina's renowned Afro-dance party, Jump N Funk, is the world's premier celebration of the life, legacy and music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Tonight we back in action at Li’l Ricky’s Rib Shack. Special guest on the set on Wednesday, October 7^th will be my mans Marky Enriquez (Massive Selector SF). This is one of my main dudes in The Bay, and has always steadily booked me out there, as well as steadily booking Happy Feet, my summer holiday party with Bobbito Garcia. Help me welcome my Pinoy Brother to our world!

I’m excited to announce JUMPNFUNK’s Fela Kuti Birthday “Felabration” series! This year, JUMPNFUNK will be happening in NYC, LA, SF, and ATL. We are also doing our events in conjunction with Manchild Black, Ian Friday and Libation in NYC at SOB’s, Footlong Development in LA at Tantra, 330 Ritch in SF, and Spread Love in AtlantaW’ve also joined forces with FELA! On Broadway, Knitting Factory Records, and Giant Step. Knitting Factory Records have purchased the rights to the Fela Kuti recordings catalogue, and Giant Step is their promotional arm. We’ve all been anticipating the arrival of the FELA! On Broadway, and we are extremely proud to be associated with all parties involved. Here’s to some beautiful nights together in October.

(A Fête For the Birthday of Fela Kuti and the New Broadway Musical FELA!)

It is rare that an artist erupts onto the musical landscape, defines a genre, shakes the world its core and departs too soon leaving a legacy that can fill the night sky. Jazz had John Coltrane. Rock had Jimi Hendrix. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti and on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th Jump N Funk, Libation, FELA! The Musical, The Museum for African Art & S.O.B.'s pay homage to the life of Nigeria’s warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa’s most prolific musical pioneer with a documentary, Music is the Weapon, live drummers, special performance by dance virtuosos Afro Mosaic Soul and leading the evening’s tribute are DJ Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk and DJ Ian Friday, minister of sound for Libation, ground zero for the Soul Revolution.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, north of Lagos and received his early education in his homeland. In 1958 Fela's parents sent him to London to go to school for medicine, but he opted to register at Trinity College's School of Music where he studied composition and chose the trumpet as his instrument. Fela became influenced by legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra and formed the Koola Lobitos in 1961. They soon became a fixture in London’s club scene. Two years later, he created “Afrobeat”, which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. Fela reformed the Koola Lobitos to Nigeria 70 and returned to Lagos. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

Playing constantly and recording at a ferocious pace, Fela and his band now called Africa 70 became huge stars in West Africa and beyond. His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. As with any musical icon, his work crossed over musical genres and influenced a multitude of artists. Fela died on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria. His incredible body of work, almost 70 albums, is now available through public demand all over the world.

FELA! The Musical brings the colorful life of this icon front and center through a provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theatre. FELA! features arrangements by Aaron Johnson and Antibalas with direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones.

DJ Rich Medina's renowned Afro-dance party, Jump N Funk, is the world's premier celebration of the life, legacy and music of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Armed with an unparalleled love for Fela and an unrivaled collection of Afrobeat records, Rich Medina re-creates the vibe of a Fela Kuti concert. Jump N Funk has been a staple in venues from New York to Berlin for nearly a decade and has established itself as the only DJ-based party dedicated to Fela Kuti and his message of peace and equality through music.

DJ Ian Friday of Tea Party Music and recording artist Manchildblack are the minister of sound and lyrical minister for the Soul Revolution. Their mission is to bring universal awareness to the Global Soul movement with Libation being its central headquarters. Every second and fourth Thursday of each month resident DJ Ian Friday digs deep in the crates of his eclectic collection to explore the multi-dimensional sounds of this music and invite all to dance, shout, evoke the spirit, pump their fists in air and deliver hosanna to the glory of Global Soul!

The Museum for African Art is dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of African art and culture. The Museum is recognized worldwide as the pre–eminent organizer of exhibitions and publisher of books devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary African art.

Special guests Afro Mosaic Soul formed in 2005. Creating a dance style known as Mosaic Soul that consists of African dance, Latin dance, tap, modern, popping & locking, break dancing, hip hop, house dance, lofting and capoiera and with movements that carry the fluidity of water, this group has quickly made a name for themselves. They have performed at Melting Pot NYC, S.O.B.s with Haitian artist Errol Josue, House Dance International and with recording artist Fertile Ground. Afro Mosaic Soul also displays their fluid choreography at Libation as the party’s hosts.

There might not be a SoHo if there was never an S.O.B.'s. This legendary venue turned a street full of non-descript warehouses into a musical hub hosting the best talent the globe has to offer. For over 20 years, S.O.B.'s has maintained its claim as NYC’s musical melting pot fusing all genres into a gumbo that is as tasty as their mojitos. A night as S.O.B.'s is s sure to please every palate.

Rich Medina re-creates the vibe of a Fela Kuti concert, utilizing culturally relevant African photography and Nigerian dance videos for visuals and live percussion by Juan Carlos Izaguire and the legendary Leonard “Doc” Gibbs to accompany his turntable mixes, not to mention live performances by some of the world’s most respected Afrobeat leaders, including both of Fela’s sons, Femi and Seun Kuti.
